Bamboo-Root Tea Tongs

Found, not made. These tea tongs are carved from a single bamboo root — the gnarled, knotted part that grows underground — and shaped only as much as the root allows. The artisan follows the natural curves, the knots, the twists, removing just enough to make the tongs function. What remains is not a tool but a piece of the earth, smoothed by decades of growth and finished by human hands.

Following the Root

Bamboo-root carving is one of the three great root-carving traditions of China, alongside wood and stone. But bamboo root is different: it is lighter, more fibrous, and full of the strange, unpredictable forms that only underground growth can produce. A master carver does not impose a design on the root. Instead, the root suggests the design, and the carver listens. This is suixing — "following the form" — the highest principle of root carving.

Tea tongs are the simplest tool in the ceremony: two arms, a hinge, a gentle squeeze to lift a warm cup from the wash. Yet in bamboo root, even this simple form becomes unique. No two roots grow alike, and so no two pairs of tongs are alike. The knots become finger rests. The curves become handles. The grain becomes grip. To use them is to hold something that was already there, waiting to be found.
