Bamboo-Thread Porcelain Tea Scoop

A porcelain heart wrapped in a thousand bamboo threads. This tea scoop begins as a thin white ceramic form, then is hand-woven with bamboo filaments so fine they resemble silk. The technique — bamboo-thread porcelain, or zhusikouci — originated in Chengdu and was once reserved for the imperial court. Each strand is split, smoothed, and woven by hand; a single scoop takes days to complete.

A Thousand Threads

The craft begins with bamboo. Artisans select two-year-old bamboo from the mountains of Sichuan, split it into strips, then split those strips again — and again — until each filament is thinner than a human hair. The threads are then woven tightly around a porcelain core, following the curve of the ceramic so precisely that the weave seems grown from the surface rather than applied to it.

The result is a surface that is both cool and warm: porcelain beneath, bamboo above. The weave protects the ceramic from chipping, absorbs the oils of the hand, and deepens in color with use. No two weaves are identical — the rhythm of each artisan's hands leaves a signature as individual as a fingerprint. This is tea ware that asks to be held, not merely displayed.
