The color of the sky just after rain — Ru ware celadon was the most coveted porcelain of the Song imperial court. Fewer than seventy complete pieces survive today. This bamboo-hat bowl captures that impossible blue-green, glazed thin over a delicate gray body and finished with the signature craquelure that only time can deepen.
The Story
The Color of Rain
Legend says Emperor Huizong of the Song dynasty dreamed of a sky clearing after rain, and commanded his potters to recreate that exact color. What emerged was Ru ware — a pale blue-green celadon so subtle it seems to change with the light. For only forty years, the imperial kilns at Baofeng produced it; then the technique was lost.
Today, master potters in Henan work to reclaim it. Each piece is fired with a small amount of agate in the glaze, creating a soft, jade-like luminosity that cannot be rushed or forced. The bamboo-hat form — wide, shallow, flared at the rim — was the tea bowl of scholars and monks, held lightly in the palm.
